Provider Spotlight:

Dr. Jason Hann-Deschaine

Born in Rhode Island and raised in Maine, Dr. Jason Hann-Deschaine grew up on a lake and spent a lot of time as a child enjoying the outdoors. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont and graduated summa cum laude with highest honors in Psychology.

After college, he was accepted into a special program that allowed him to spend his first two years training at Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine and then finish at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School.

Following graduation, he moved to Delaware to pursue his pediatric residency at AI DuPont Children’s Hospital for Children and Thomas Jefferson University. He was named Chief Resident of Pediatrics at DuPont prior to joining Delaware Pediatrics in 2004.

Outside of medicine, he loves spending time with his wife, two boys, and a labrador retriever. He also enjoys being involved in sports and has coached youth track and field, soccer, and ice hockey over the past 25 years. He still frequently plays ice hockey, and occasionally runs, cycles, swims, and surfs.

Summer is a great time to experiment with “attractive alternatives” to screen time.   Technology is, by design, meant to attract and maintain attention!  This summer season, why not experiment as a family to see what other activities might attract and maintain attention.

For preschoolers: arts and crafts such as playdough, sand and water play, building (Legos, blocks, puzzles), outdoor nature walks, making music with household objects (pots and pans).

For elementary schoolers: arts and crafts with paper, crayons and markers, craft kits (some stores such as Michaels may have craft classes for this age group), outdoor play with others (make up games), discover a series of books one may enjoy reading, water play, cooking.

For middle school and highschoolers: provide opportunities for socialization if desired (sports groups, craft groups, reading groups), have pre-teen and teens explore what they like to do when bored without a screen, complex puzzles, Legos, is there a job they can do? (help with younger children, cleaning, laundry, yard work, cooking).

Re-Discover hobbies you may like to do as an adult!!
